A trade handed down, not a franchise bought

Nationwide Restumping & Underpinning is family run and second generation. The person who looks under your house learned this work from the person who taught him, on Victorian homes, over decades.

Jacked house showing the gap where rotten stumps were replaced

Restumping is not a job you can learn from a manual. Every Victorian house sits on different ground, and the difference between a floor that stays level for the next forty years and one that moves again in five is in how the footings are dug, how the ground is compacted, and how the house is lifted before any of that starts. That knowledge gets passed from one set of hands to another.

That is how this business came about. The trade was learned on site, from family, and it has stayed in the family. Between us there is more than 60 years of restumping and underpinning in Victorian homes: weatherboards in the inner north, post-war brick veneers in the eastern suburbs, farmhouses on reactive clay out past the ranges.

How we actually work

Every job starts with one of our people under the house, not with a figure over the phone. We look at the stumps, the bearers, the joists, the ground moisture and the subfloor ventilation, and then we write you a quote for the work the house needs. If a partial restump will do, we say so. If the cracks you are worried about are cosmetic rather than structural, we say that too.

The work is done by our own crews. We run five of them, which is the reason we can usually start sooner than the rest of the trade, and the reason you are talking to the people who will be on site rather than to a salesperson. Nothing gets handed to an unknown subcontractor after you sign.

Permits, licences and why they matter

Restumping and underpinning are permit works in Victoria. A registered builder has to pull that permit, and the job has to be inspected. It is tempting to take a cheaper number from someone who skips that step, and it is a decision that comes back at sale time: unpermitted structural work on a house is a problem for the owner, not for the operator who did it. We are registered builders and fully insured, and the permit is part of the job rather than an extra.

We also put the guarantee in writing. Ten years on the work, which is only a sensible promise to make if the footings underneath it were done properly in the first place.

Why homeowners pick us

Six things we will put in writing

  • Second generation, family run

This is a family business and the trade was handed down. Between us there is over 60 years of restumping and underpinning in Victorian homes. You are not dealing with a call centre that subcontracts the work out.

  • Fully licensed builders, fully insured

Registered builders and insured, which matters because restumping and underpinning are permit works. An unlicensed operator cannot pull the permit, and work done without one becomes your problem at sale time.

  • The fastest lead time in Victoria

Five large crews means we are not quoting work six months out. When a floor is dropping or a wall is cracking, waiting half a year for a start date makes the repair bigger and more expensive.

  • We beat any written quote

Bring us a written quote from another licensed builder for the same scope and we will beat it. Same stumps, same footings, same guarantee, lower number.

  • Every postcode in Victoria

Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, the Peninsula, Gippsland and everywhere between. Regional jobs are not a problem and they are not priced as a favour.

  • 10 year guarantee

Ten years on the work, in writing. Stumps set on properly compacted footings do not move, and we are prepared to stand behind that for a decade.
